Eighth Incision [Video; Backdated to the Afternoon of the 13th]

[The broadcast starts as any other one from Syre would: with the remnants of a meal just barely in frame and the alchemist sipping a glass of water. However, it seems she didn't mean to start the broadcast this early, as her expression slowly changes to one of surprise -- once she realizes the feed is on, anyway.]

Oh, I wasn't quite ready to talk yet. [She laughs, a bit embarrassed.] Well, I suppose I should get on with it.

[She clears her throat, takes another sip of water, then starts again.]

Good afternoon, Luceti. Bit of a grey day, don't you think? Reminds me almost of home, in a sense, with the sky looking as though it's about to snow any moment.

This will be my first winter here, so I'd like to ask: what manner of celebrations do we have here? What beliefs, what customs, generally prevail at this time of year? Are there feasts? Celebrations? Silent ceremonies?

I apologize for the barrage of questions -- I'm just a little curious.

Terran celebrations are... qu-quite different from the ones here... though the name seems... s-similar.

[The word "Christmas" has, over several hundred years, changed quite a bit - and lost most of its meaning. The majority of Terrans aren't even very familiar with the religion that spawned it. Robert is an example of that.]

... Regardless, I... f-find I know relatively little about it... from what I u-understand, it is mostly a time to... give and receive gifts, and... spend time with th-those whom one cares about...

That verifies what I've heard from other people, then.

[She nods to herself, as though affirming something she's learned.]

Robert... what do you plan on doing for the holiday? Have you got plans to celebrate with anyone?

[Hmm... does he?]

... Well. I... a-always spend my time with Don, so that is... a g-given...

... But otherwise, I... admittedly am not c-certain...

Ah.

Well, at least you have someone to spend them with. [For the briefest of moments, there's a tinge of envy(?) in her voice.]

[Robert's not quite sure he can detect it, but the statement is unequivocal enough.]

You... d-do not...?

[Syre's tone is now very obviously saddened, and more than a little bitter.]

No. I do not, unfortunately.

[... It hurts to hear Syre say that, because it brings up so many memories of months - years - of loneliness back at home.

So Robert does now what some people tried to do for him.]

... I... would w-welcome your company, during the holidays, Syre...

[His voice is very tentative. He knows from experience that, when you are used to being alone, it's hard to accept when people try to let you in.]

[It's really the thought that counts, Robert.]

[She's sincerely appreciative, and it comes through in her voice.] I'd be honored, Robert. Truly.

... In th-that case... should I prepare for a-added company? Of course, I will ask Don, but I am... c-certain he would not mind... [It's not as if Don doesn't randomly invite people over either.]

...if Don is all right with it... then yes.

I do not want to be an unnecessary burden, after all.

... It would... h-hardly be one at all, no...

[Quietly:] ... Besides, you... you are my f-friend. As such, you would... never be a burden...

[~~Except friends can certainly be burdens on rare occasion, but Robert is too clingy to think that way.~~]

[Well, if that doesn't warm her heart, she doesn't know what will.]
