[Action, Part One]

[It's been several days since the Kin'Corans have returned home -- several days in which Syre has been oddly at ease with herself.]

[Today, however, she feels... anxious. antsy, even.]

[The rush of recently arrived New Feathers make her want to go out and about, possibly get acquainted with some of the new faces. Of course, anyone she already knows is free to bump into her, as well!]

[Voice]

[Later in the evening, she sets up a feed for a little voice chat.]

Good evening, friends and New Feathers -- that is to say, anyone that has just recently arrived to our fine enclosure... My name is Syre Atries.

Rather than waste your time with a wordy introduction, I'd like to pose a question.

Are any of you interested in the sciences? Biology, specifically. I've been wanting to get back to my research as of late, and it's quite hard to hold a discussion when there are so few that enjoy it as much as I do...

[Then, later that night, Syre is going to be roaming about the plaza. More specifically, she's going to be people watching -- the few people that are out and about at this time of night will not be spared her studious, almost analytical gaze.]

[Those of you that notice her watching are free to question why she's staring at you like a scientist would study a lab rat, of course.]

[All this talk of war, she knew the question would arise eventually.]

[She thinks of the words for a moment -- memories of the war also brought up memories of her drive for urging it on -- and her voice is soft and heavy with emotion when she speaks again.]

There were a band of bandits from the nation that bordered our north-eastern territory. They razed a quiet, peaceful village, and their homeland was unwilling to put them to trial.

Tensions ran high and people grew angry. The Royal Guard insisted that the one of the enemy nation's villages be razed, as well...

...naturally, things escalated from there.

Ahh, so a war over diplomatic breakdown. That...is unfortunate.

[Luke meets her eyes, and shakes his head apologetically, feeling sorry for having dredged up memories. He speaks up in a dull, sad voice]

My own war is...a bit more ideological. Thirty years ago a man named Palpatine took control over the Galactic Senate and declared himself Emperor. He'd been manipulating behind the scenes for decades, and hiding a secret. Palpatine was a Sith Lord, a Force-sensitive like myself skilled in the Dark Side. He used his political power to eliminate enemies and turn the Republic into the Galactic Empire.

A resistance movement formed, and due to circumstances I wound up joining the Rebellion. In time, we managed to overthrow the Empire and even kill Palpatine, but even now he still has fanatically loyal followers.

[Syre simply bows her head in response. No need to feel sorry, Luke -- she's come to terms with everything.]

...All tyrants have some measure of charisma. It doesn't surprise me that there are still those that follow him, even in death.

Yes, or just the xenophobic dislike of non-human sapients. It was fairly publically well known that Palpatine was a Sith Lord, after the war got into full swing. Fear and oppression do drive people to insane loyalty though, you are right.

[Luke shakes his head, remembering how two duels with the Emperor]

Still, he's gone. Nothing left but a few Planetary governors and fleet commanders desperately seeking alliances outside the galaxy.

The most trying task is done, then. The rest will surely fall into place with time.

[Or, that was how they would work in an ideal environment.]

Yes, it is, and I'm confident that it will.

[Luke shrugged.]

Supreme Admiral Pellaeon had made overtures of peace to my sister, Leia, on their last communication. That was shortly before the Darksaber incident, and Admiral Daala's attack on the Jedi Academy. But, all things considered, a sizable chunk of the Imperial Navy wants to surrender. Thats good.

I may not be completely familiar with the matter, but that certainly sounds good.

[Having realized that the area around them is still very much sparkling with the results of her alchemy, Syre kneels down for a moment, touching the circle and allowing everything to return to general normalcy. small shards of crystal still fleck the ground, but it's nothing that can't be cleaned up.]

Its definitely a start to the end.

[He's still impressed, by the way. Good job]

And, what sort of weapons do you use in your war? Magic?

The opposing nation relies mostly on their physical units. They've got beastmen working in the woods, and their 'berserkers' as frontline units.

My homeland uses a combination of alchemists and knights in the army, though we also have a few mercenaries fighting among our ranks and training units of various types.

There are a few knights that use alchemy to supplement their own fearsome combat skills. ...a knight with a flaming sword is certainly very intimidating!

So you fight with more traditional armaments then? No firearms, or artillery?

[He says this with actual admiration in his voice. He respects that form of battle far, far more than those who use blasters and turbolaser emplacements]

The only ranged weaponry we've got are bows. So yes, we are very much using traditional armaments.

[A pause, before adding with a laugh:] Well, and whatever a wind-manipulating alchemist can use to their advantage.

That form of battle certainly has a charm to it. Its more personal, and less a test of overwhelming firepower then.

It's certainly more taxing on the mental processes, as well. Having to weigh a unit's advantages over the enemy, keeping the terrain in mind...

It's like a game of chess, but with people's lives on the line.

That's a poor way to think of it, I think. War is never a game, and the goal should be to preserve as much life as possible. Ideally, its best won from outside the rules.

Ah... I didn't mean to make light of the subject.

War is horrible, yes, and the goal should be to mimimize the death. What I had meant to say was that is is a mental challenge, trying to do so.

..."outside the rules"? [There's a faint tilting of her head.]

Yes, through deception and guile I should think. Disabling supply lines, removing diplomatic options. Pulling the rug out from under an army.

[Luke laughs, his old commando training coming to the forefront here]

Sneaking into the enemy encampment and removing the leader, or stealing battle plans.

[Syre's lips curl into an amused smirk, chuckling softly.]

I didn't think you the sort to resort to such... interesting options.

Oh? Those end the conflicts with the least amount of bloodshed. That, combined with Diplomacy, is the primary role of a Jedi.

I've always been raised to handle issues directly, that's all. Doing things like that, while clever, just seems off to me.

But, every world is different, yes? Not every person solves issues in the same way.

When able, we try to. But, I suppose I could also chalk that up to the logistics involved in war in my world.

But yes, you are right.
